Automation Engineer Internship
Katerra is looking for an Automation Engineer Intern to contribute to the engineering team responsible for defining, developing and deploying phases of automation for our Phoenix factory. Automation will include robotics, in-line custom automation, kinematics, handling of complex geometries, measurement and test capability as well as off-line uses of handling and storage system such as AGV and ASRS. A successful intern will take initiative, is able to be self-directed and able to adjust to an ambiguous environment. Our interns will gain valuable skills and on-the-job experience while learning from expert professionals.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Contribute to design and development of automated solution to manage manufacturing of wall and floor panels and subsequent integration of mechanical, electrical and plumbing parts.
  • Collaborate with factory ops to ensure automation is prioritized based on needs/cost/ROI & quality and overall delivery performance.
  • Gain experience and knowledge on Program Management when dealing with Robotics vendor, Machine builder and System Integrator
  • Support Engineer to perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and support future upgrades to automation
  • Assist in the development of equipment/automation training plan for line operators and technician.


Required Skills & Experience
  • Excellent progress toward the completion of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Some experience with Automation and Controls
  • Theoretical knowledge of PLC programs, IPC Program, development using Python, C++, etc.
  • Can work hands-on in a fast pace environment and enjoy realization of idea.

Preferred Skills & Experience
  • BSEE or BSME with Automation & Controls emphasis
  • Transferrable skills of automation from other industry with both continuous flow and discrete assembly process.
  • Familiar with sensors and real-time data access and analytics.
  • Applied knowledge with TCP/IP devices, OPC , HMI, SCADA, Profinet, Modbus, Ethercat and other protocols and standards
  • Automation implementation in Assembly/Process and Finished goods handling/transportation – preferably with larger, heavy payload products
  • Work with linking automation to Factory MES for routing controls & visibility. Shop floor development support tied to system automation
  • Data acquisition for real-time analytics, CAD-CAM, CIM
